Dec 27th 1-2-3: Creating Using Analog tools And Their Advantages

1: Creating Using Analog Tools And Their Advantages ( 1 minute read )

Did you know that most people write slower than than type?

Might seem kind of obvious. Hitting some keys on a keyboard is a lot faster than moving a pencil or pen. Most anyone would agree with this.

Did you also know that when we type, we tend to be less connected to what we are creating?

This is due to a few reasons:

  1. Connecting Emotions: When we handwrite, we tend to evoke more emotions simply due to the fact that we are moving our body more to write.

  2. Memory Strengthening: Since we are using more movement in our body, we are also utilizing different senses such as feel, sound, sight, and even in some cases smell depending on what we are using to write with and on. This forms more connections in your mind which makes the whole process more memorable, strengthening your memory centers.

  3. Better Pace for Creativity: Since we are moving more slowly to write, we are also allowing for our brains to form connections at a pace that is more in line with its’ natural speed which allows us to create deeper works.

What a trip!

I noticed the difference that writing and drawing made when using traditional tools versus digital, but didn’t realize how much of this had been studied.

And I’m not the only one!

Stanley Donwood, the artist who made all of Radiohead’s album artwork, said that “You never really get tto touch anything that you’re doing unless you print it out.” He feels that not being able to touch the artwork he is creating has a strong effect on the end result of the art. There is truth to this!

Now I don’t want to come across as vilifying digital art, I love working digitally as well and it is certainly incredibly useful for the progression of art as a whole.

That being said, there is something special about putting pen to paper.

Give it a try sometime! Find a way to work without digital and see how it works for you.

You may just find new ideas and connections forming in your mind!

2: Creative Prompts From Us (ex. Write a short story, a poem, a song, or draw a quick illustration of these! Let your imagination run free.)

I. Use a blank sheet of paper and use some markers, pens, pencils, and whatever else you have lying around to map out a memory that is nice and cozy to you. See how it inspires you to create something new.

II. Try going out into nature, and collect leaves, flowers, and any other pieces of foliage you can find and use them to write and draw something new.

3: Inspirational Quotes From Others

I. "To touch is to experience directly, without mediation, and physical creation grounds our imagination in reality.”

– Anni Albers, Artist

II. “Working with my hands connects me to the tactile world, and it’s from that connection that my ideas flow best.”

– Louise Bourgeois, Artist

III. “The physical act of shaping something with your hands brings a visceral understanding of what it means to create.”

– Constantin Brâncuși, Sculptor and Painter
