Jan 31st 1-2-3: Share Your Work
1: Share Your Work ( 1 minute read )
Creating while alone can be daunting, but sharing it with others can be even scarier.
We all know the feeling, sitting in our rooms drawing, playing, writing. All to an audience of one, ourselves. It is so much easier to make mistakes and discover when not sharing.
But this isn’t true.
In fact, some of the best works of art were worked on alongside others. Both J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were part of a writing group in their youth called, The Inklings. They would all write, meet, and share what they had been working on with each other for both criticism as well as for fun.
They shared their art.
When you share your art, you open up the ability to connect with others. There have been several drawings or poems I have written that are special to me or that I enjoyed, but once I shared them with someone else it shed light on things even I did not notice.
Now you don’t have to share everything.
It is, however, healthy and exciting to share bits of what you are working on. Share discoveries and secrets about the creative process that you enjoyed so that others can use them. Who knows, they may even end up sharing some secrets of their own with you!
In today’s day and age, sharing has never been easier.
While I will always be an advocate of meeting in person and collaborating and sharing with someone face to face, the internet has made it possible to connect with others you never would have imagined. It is a blessing that we are able to share a sketch or thought with others, and to connect and play off of each other’s ideas. This, I believe, makes our works more fruitful and complex.
So the next time you create something, maybe send it over to a friend or family member.
Maybe post it online.
Who knows what can happen next?
