Dec 13th 1-2-3: Make The Art You Want To See

1: Make The Art You Want To See ( 1 minute read )

Sometimes, sequels aren’t anything like what you wanted.

I know this has happened to me in the past with movies, books, video games, and music. You enjoy something deeply and it resonates with you, so of course you can’t wait until the sequel. Then it comes out and it is not anything like what you expected.

Why does this happen?

I believe that the reason why is because we end up envisioning the sequel we could only think of, something that we want to see.

We are all unique in our experiences and likewise, with our desires.

Because of this, when we are inspired by a piece of art, it is normal for us to think about we’d love to see in the sequel.

  • We didn’t like where the story went, so we write a new story

  • We had all these ideas for how the next album could sound, so we make those songs ourselves

  • We could see the progression of a character in our mind’s eye, so we draw it ourselves

This can become a very powerful tool to use when we think of what we’d like to create next. You can utilize this to make something completely new that combines what you liked about the original art and what you’d like to see happen next. Whatever it is that you wanted to see next, that is what you can create.

What if you wanted to imagine what a new album would sound like from your favorite band, so you went and created that album yourself?

This is just what Bradford Cox, a member from Deerhunter, would do whenever his favorite band’s hadn’t put out any new music for a bit. Then when the album would eventually come out, he would listen to it and compare that with what he recorded. Would you know it, that some of these songs he recorded would end up becoming Deerhunter songs anyways!

So the next time you are enjoying something that doesn’t have a sequel out yet, ask yourself what you would like to see?

What would you love to watch, hear, read?

Only you can see that the way you do, because you are uniquely, you.

2: Creative Prompts From Us (ex. Write a short story, a poem, a song, or draw a quick illustration of these! Let your imagination run free.)

I. In keeping with the theme of the newsletter, what book, album, movie, show, video game, artwork that hasn’t come out yet would you love to see now? Think about what that could be like, now try making something like what you envisioned!

II. What is a sequel that you didn’t like? How could it have been better? What would you have preferred?

3: Inspirational Quotes From Others

I. “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”

– Edgar Degas, Painter

II. “If you don’t see the book you want on the shelf, write it.”

– Beverly Cleary, Writer

III. “The best way to predict the future is to create it.”

– Abraham Lincoln, US President
